Oils must be mixed with a carrier or base oil, such as sweet almond oil or grapeseed oil for massage. The essential oil content in a blend should usually be between 1% and 3%, depending on the type of disorder. As a guideline, the following proportions can be worked on:

Essential Oil Base Oil

20 to 60 drops 100ml

7 to 25 drops 25ml

3 to 5 drops 1 tsp

When treating problems with the skin itself, essential oils can be prepared in the same way as for massage, only using a more nourishing base oil, such as jojoba, avocado or apricot kernel oil. A few drops of an essential oil can also be added to a bland cream or lotion, or added to a basic face mask. For conditions such as cold sores or athlete’s foot, it is better to use an alcohol-based lotion rather than a cream or oil. Add 6 drops of essential oil to 5ml of isopropyl alcohol or vodka. This mixture can be further diluted in a litre of boiled water and used for open cuts, sores, chickenpox, etc.

Hot & Cold Compresses

Skin Oils & Lotions

Massage

Hot -

(particularly good for backache, rheumatism, arthritis, abscesses, earache & toothache) Fill a bowl with very hot water and add 4 to 5 drops of essential oil. Dip a folded piece of cotton cloth, cotton wool or flannel into the bowl, squeeze out excess water and place cloth on the affected area. When cloth has cooled to blood heat, repeat.

Cold -

(particularly good for headaches, sprains, strains and other hot, swollen conditions) Cold compresses are made in a similar way, using ice cold rather than hot water.

Hair Care

Add a few drops of essential oils in the final hair rinse or add straight to a mild shampoo. For unwanted parasites such as lice or fleas, add 5ml of an essential oil to 100ml of vodka. For an excellent conditioning treatment, add essential oils to a nourishing base oil such as olive oil, massage into scalp, then wrap hair in a warm towel for an hour.

Baths

Add 5 to 10 drops to your bath water when the tub is full.

Vaporization

Room fragrancing can be achieved with oil burners, aromatic diffusers, a few drops of oil on a light bulb ring or in a small bowl of water placed on the radiator – ALL OUT OF REACH OF CHILDREN & PETS!
A few drops can also be put onto a pillow or handkerchief for use throughout the day.

Steam inhalation

(Especially suited for sinus, throat & chest infections, or facial saunas for unclogging pores, etc)
Add 5 drops of essential oils to a bowl of hot water, cover the head and bowl with a towel and breathe deeply for a minute, then repeat.

Douche

(Useful to combat genitor-urinary infections such as thrush, cystitis, candida, etc.) Add 5 to 10 drops of the appropriate oil to a litre of warm water and shake well. Use mixture in a sitz bath, bidet or put into an enema/douche pot. Lavender can also aid the healing process after childbirth.

Neat Application

Generally, essential oils cannot be applied to the skin undiluted. However, Lavender can be applied directly to burns, cuts and insect bites, tea tree to spots and lemon to warts. Certain oils can be dabbed neat on the skin for perfume.

ESSENTIAL OILS SHOULD NOT BE USED AT HOME TO TREAT SERIOUS MEDICAL OR PSYCHOLOGICAL PROBLEMS.
